Away from the river bank the vegetation verges on karoo type, with trees along dry water courses and small bushes and tufts of grass the main ground cover. The camelthorn tree grows in abundance in this area, while other trees and shrubs that can be seen here include the quiver tree Aloe dichotoma, spekboom Portulacaria afra, sweet thorn Acacia karoo, black thorn A mellifera, kunibush Rhus undulata, white karee R viminalis, wild tamarisk Tamarix usneoides and wild olive Olea africana. Mammals indigenous to the area are baboon, vervet monkey, scrub hare, leopard, caracal, African wild cat, bat-eared fox, Cape fox, black-backed jackal, Cape clawless otter, striped polecat, suricate, yellow mongoose, dassie, common duiker, springbok, klipspringer, steenbok, gemsbok and kudu. There are 175 bird species in this area including the Goliath heron, black booted and African fish eagles, various kingfishers and the common waxbill to name a few.
